About Us

'Darton, Longman and Todd is the story of three men who shared two convictions. One was the belief that the time was ripe for the first-ever Bible in contemporary English. The other was that a lot of people still wanted to read serious works on religion – far more than was popularly supposed in many publishing houses. So vigorously did they hold these views that in 1959 they decided to hive off from Longmans, Green (no less) and form their own company. The publication in 1966 of the Jerusalem Bible turned them almost overnight from a struggling, obscure company to one with an international reputation, a reputation it has constantly enhanced with its rapidly expanding list of some of the most prestigious thinking on religion of our time, thinking indeed usually slightly ahead of its time.' - From Darton, Longman and Todd: A Short History (1959–1980)

Today, DLT retains and continues to enhance its standing as an internationally-respected publisher of brave, groundbreaking, independent books on matters of heart, mind and soul that meet the needs and interests of ordinary people.

Our books are written by, and for, people of all faiths and none. We believe that spirituality and faith are important to all people, of all backgrounds, and that the wisdom of any one culture or tradition can inform and nourish another.

We publish new books (in print and as e-books) in three different categories:
Faith without Walls – inspirational books that do not spring from conventional religion
Faith books – wisdom, teaching, spirituality and devotional works by and for people of faith
Books that Help and Heal – exploring mental health, counselling and self-help

We also still publish the Jerusalem Bible, and its revised and updated successor, the New Jerusalem Bible – still one of the most clear, accurate and distinguished modern English translations of the Bible.

The world is fragile. And it is impossible to understand the world if you do not understand what drives the human heart and the human spirit. DLT books will not tell you what to think. But they might change the way you see the world, and they might even change the way you live.
